A challenging e-commerce project with ample preparation, research, competitive comparison and workshop sessions with the client at their Calgary offices.

In order to show accurate prices and the services available at a customer’s address (and avoid misleading visitors in thinking services are available), it’s important that a visitor to the site share their location. Detecting the location through the browser could lead to inaccurate information or be blocked through a browser’s settings. The challenge is asking for the visitor’s postal code in a way that is not invasive and likely to turn off potential customers.

After hours of sketching ideas, I wireframed my solution, which involved a drawer where visitors could submit their postal code, dismiss the drawer, or scroll past if they didn’t wish to share any information. They can explore which services are available, but the site makes it clear that a postal code is necessary to provide accurate information.

The implemented solution, though visually a bit different, was used on the site for years.
